Surf Contest Memorandum of Understanding
Friends collaborated with the contest organizers and the State of Hawaii Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation DOBOR to produce a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to regulate the surf contests at Kewalos. This was in response to a high of 14 surf contests in the summer of 2006 which came to a surf contest almost every weekend, pretty much shutting down the park for the general public. As a result of the MOU the maximum number of contests allowed is eight per year.
It has since worked out very well striking a balance between the interests of the organizers and the park users.
Mahalo to all for your kokua.
Another important accomplishment was the making of the Surf Contest Schedule which comes out in late January and lists the eight contests for the entire year. In November, DOBOR meets with Friends and the contest organizers to establish the schedule for the upcoming year. This schedule is posted at the Park and on our website. The community can now see in advance the dates of all the contests and plan accordingly.
